MnAMP at Minnapolis Manufacturing Career & Training Expo

February 2, 2018

MnAMP and three consortium colleges - South Central College, Century College, and Minneapolis Community and Technical College - were represented on Tuesday at the Minneapolis Manufacturing Career and Training Expo, sponsored by the City of Minneapolis and Hennepin County and co-hosted by the Sundance Family Foundation and 800 West Broadway.

The expo featured both a traditional job fair as well as a "Wunderkammer" cabinet of curiosity that featured hands-on engaging occupational exhibits to help forge a connection between youth and jobs in manufacturing and technical fields. MnAMP team members also presented to employers about the many opportunities that are available to partner with MnAMP consortium colleges.

The South Central College/MnAMP exhibit featured hands-on activities including a welding simulator for participants to test their welding skills and a mechatronics motor system that students could control using an ultrasonic sensor. The exhibit also featured a 3D printer in operation throughout the exhibit and a computer integrated machining CNC simulator demonstration.

Manufacturers' New Recruitment Strategy

January 2, 2018

MnAMP colleges have been working with employers since 2015 to enhance the image of manufacturing and raise awareness of these high-wage careers. Now, according to The Wall Street Journal, manufacturers' newest recruitment strategy includes convincing parents that manufacturing can lead to lucrative careers for their kids.

The article To Recruit Workers, Manufacturers Go to Parents' Nights points out that "barriers to persuading parents can be high given some skepticism about manufacturing as a stable career." However, the number of manufacturing employees has been steadily rising since the recession, and open manufacturing positions are at their highest level since 2001. So employers are now working to convince parents - who have a large influence over their high school age children's decisions - of the benefits of a career in manufacturing with a technical education.
