Manufacturing Day Events at South Central College

Manufacturing Day℠ is a celebration of modern manufacturing meant to inspire the next generation of manufacturers. While Manufacturing Day is officially October 6 this year, the Dream It. Do It. Minnesota Statewide Tour of Manufacturing runs the full week from October 1-7, 2017.

South Central College invites you to attend Manufacturing Day events at both its Faribault and North Mankato campuses:

Made in Faribault 2017 - A Salute to Manufacturing
Attend a luncheon and program featuring a panel of local manufacturing representatives who will share their insights and forecasts for manufacturing careers.

This free event, which is similar to a "Parade of Homes," allows people to stop by one or more locations throughout the day to take a tour and learn about each business and see first-hand the impact they have on our region. The event is open to everyone and gives students, job seekers and the general public an opportunity to learn more about manufacturing careers in our community.

Lake Superior College featured in Duluthian Magazine

Lake Superior College was recently featured in the September-October 2017 issue of the Duluthian.

The article covers Lake Superior College's partnership with the Sappi pulp and paper mill in Cloquet, Minnesota to provide the related instruction for dual-training grants received under the Minnesota PIPELINE Project. Dual-training programs provide structured on-the-job training and related instruction so employees can develop the necessary occupational competencies to succeed in their chosen career.

The Sappi facility was recently visited by the Office of Higher Education for a dual-training grant visit. The representative was able to meet the students, tour the facility, and see the commitment of the training committee planning efforts to provide the best possible skill development for its employees while keeping steady production of Sappi’s products. The representative commented on the careful planning that was done to determine the best length of time, learning styles, materials, and class sizes that would best fit the adult learner.

  • The career technical training – The Second Chance Act: Technology Careers – that the Department of Corrections provides for men and women in correctional facilities to prepare them for careers upon release
  • Department of Corrections and RESOURCE’s partnership and how continued training upon release can be provided - plus additional supports including Career Counseling that help individuals prepare for work
  • The employer benefits of hiring individuals with felony records, including bonding through the MN Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) and federal tax breaks
  • Innovative strategies employers are utilizing to hire individuals with felony records

SageGlass Video Featuring SCC Students

A video released by global electrochromic glass provider, SageGlass, features maintenance team members Dario and Matt who have participated in a dual-training program in Mechatronics at South Central College (SCC). In the video below, they discuss personal growth and the many opportunities at SageGlass.

One of those opportunities is the Learn Work Earn dual-training program through SCC that enables participants to receive on-campus instruction while earning wages for related on-the-job training at their company. Not only that, but there are no out-of-pocket expenses for SageGlass employees since their tuition, books, and fees have been fully funded through a Minnesota Pipeline grant.
